Learn Facebook Marketing: 10 Steps to Start Promoting Your Business on Facebook

Business on Facebook

Facebook is changing rapidly from year to year.

If you regularly use Facebook, you must be aware.

Facebook marketing tutorials that are effective 2-3 years ago are most likely no longer valid.

Or worse, even harmful.

The problem is that the online information movement in Indonesia is still slower than outside, so expired guides are often found.

There are more…
Hey! I've some great article(s) for you, so, let's check this article(s) out: ExcuZily
... now when talking about Facebook marketing, we always think of 'advertisements'.

Whereas before there were still ads that you MUST prepare first.

For this reason this guide was made.

You will learn what steps you have to do in the world of modern Facebook and marketing, so that your strategy is perfect.

1. Find 5 pages of your rival's brand on Facebook

Here's the problem:

People who have just jumped into Facebook usually immediately "play rough".

That is, they don't know anything about Facebook. What to do, what others like, what is effective for their business.

But nothing has made a lot of posts ...

... it's okay to post an ad.

Even if you don't know anything yourself, even using advertising agency services on Facebook will be ineffective.

You yourself must know (or at least one of the insiders).

Therefore, the best way to learn is to see and imitate what is effective in your own industry.

Here's how to find it:
Do you want to be a master? If yes, just visit this site: Mastah Muda
Enter "Pages about [industry] that are liked by my friends" in the Facebook search field. The result is like the following picture.
Business on Facebook
Facebook will show pages in the topics you enter, and that are popular among your own friends.

Click on 'See more', this is your rival.

Find as many as you think is most similar to your business. Ignore the few followers or many followers but there are no likes & comments.

Then, learn this:

  • Like what post gets a lot of likes
  • How often they publish new posts
  • What time does the post get a lot of likes
  • Photos, covers and other profiles

And others ... there is still much we can learn.

Most importantly, when you will make an ad, you can target people who like your rival's page.

As such, the ads are right on target and cheaper.

2. Create an interesting page, follow the following tips

On Facebook, the page is like your store.

If the shop is bad, no one will come.

First, enter this link to create a Facebook Page. Then choose the right category. Serious. Different categories can be different features provided.

Besides that it would be strange to see if it didn't fit.

If you are still not sure, try to look at the page category of your competitor.

Second, enter your brand name.

These tips for naming pages that usually make people wrong:

  • Use your brand name, point
  • Do not use product / service types as names (for example: "home contractor")
  • Short, 2-3 words optimal. Separate with spaces

Third, complete your profile starting from the URL, description, photo, cover, and other information. Follow these tips:

  • Picture profile: use high resolution logos, do not use blurry images
  • Cover: use attractive images with high resolution, do not use any images from the internet
  • About: explain your business briefly & interestingly, remove wordy words
  • Complete all information in the Info tab, as complete as possible

When you just create a page, you will be asked to place an advertisement immediately. Do not. It is not time yet.

Even so, you can enter your audience data now.

3. Know and determine the target of your prospective audience

In the world of marketing, we already understand that targeting a group of audiences is far more effective than being too general. It's hard to make a strategy that can be effective for all people.

This will be useful when you create content.

The most fatal mistake here is usually to use language that is inappropriate for their own target audience.

Example:

A business, the target market is people aged 35+.

But then on Facebook they made a post aimed at young people. For example using slang, or making funny pictures.

Not appropriate right?

That's the simplest form.

In essence, we must provide what is appropriate and attractive to our own target audience.

Fortunately, with Facebook we can easily recognize who the audience we are looking for. How to do it again by utilizing a rival brand.

The key word: "Interests liked by people who like [page name]"
Business on Facebook
Hmm ... so the people we are targeting are people who are religious, dear mothers, love football, study psychology, and like to draw.

When creating content, if you discuss these things, the number of likes will be more.

You can also replace the 'interests' keyword, for example:

  • Movies
  • Books
  • Restaurants
  • Places
  • Public figures
  • Organizations
  • etc. Whatever you can

If your page already has a lot of likes, you can also use your own page to make it more accurate.

4. Website optimization for Facebook

If you have talked about Facebook marketing, you should now have your own website.

If not, make it immediately.

Doing online marketing without a website is like slow suicide.

Ok, that's enough.

You must have seen a website that when shared on Facebook is like this:
Business on Facebook
The picture is blurry, unrelated, or what appears is not the main image. Then the title is different from the original, the description is also not clear.

That's one result of a website that isn't optimized.

We want that when our website is shared, everything is right. The picture is right, the resolution is good, and has an interesting title and description.

This is so that more people visit our website.

For that, there are several "meta tags" that you must install on the website. Precisely in the <head> section.

As OGP.me points out:
Business on Facebook
Confused?

Don't you understand what this means?

Do not worry.

If you are a WordPress user, install a plugin called Yoast SEO. From this plugin we can manage the mentioned meta tags more easily.

If you are not a WordPress user and don't understand HTML at all, the easiest way is to send this article to your website developer.

After that, test in the Open Graph Debugger.

5. Understand the tips for making a good post on Facebook
On Facebook, we can't make too many posts in a day.

The reason is 2:

Post more than 2x a day will get less likes
Every post must be quality, it is difficult to make many quality posts in a day
We have discussed more fully in the guide to increase likes on Facebook.

Therefore, every post you have to think about carefully.

Here are some tips.

Tips for each type of post (text, image, video, link)
First, text type posts should not stand alone but be accompanied by pictures, videos, or links. People tend to skip text posts because they are not interesting.

In addition, it is difficult to convey messages with text because Facebook will cut the text that is too long.

So as much as possible avoid text without media.

Whereas if you use video, make sure the video is uploaded on Facebook. Avoid putting video links from YouTube.

Why?

See the following picture:
Business on Facebook
Facebook is known to be a bit 'cunning' in this matter. They deliberately reduce the reach of YouTube videos when posted to Facebook.

Conversely, videos uploaded directly to Facebook get more reach, comments, likes and shares.

Third, the post is in the form of an image.

To be optimal, the size of the image you use should be close to a square, or square. The minimum image size is 472 × 394 px. More than that it doesn't matter, but don't get less.

Here is an example:
Larger size images will automatically be reduced without cutting the part.

Finally, for the post in the form of a link

Links that get the best engagement on Facebook usually have landscape-sized images (extending to the side).
Business on Facebook
So, if you make content on the website, make sure the image has a minimum size of 470 × 246 px. More than that is not a problem, provided the ratio remains close.

Then, which type of post is the best?
Actually depends.

Depending on the weight of the contents.

Post on social media, including Facebook, generally cannot be too heavy. The picture contains only a little information, so does the text.

Even videos on Facebook on average are only seen in less than 30 seconds:
Business on Facebook
So, if your content is only in the form of brief information, entertainment, notifications, and the like, then use photos or videos.

But if the weight is high, don't.

For high and long content, publish it on your own website then post the link to Facebook.

When is the best time to post on Facebook?

Again, depends.

Depends on who your audience is.

Are they people who are active on Facebook all day or just at night? Are they active during weekdays or weekends?

If it is logic at a glance, the active clock might be like this:

Student / student: weekdays, nights
Worker: weekends, nights
Housewife: weekday, afternoon
Again, that's only possible.

To find out for sure, continue reading until step 7 below.

6. Search and participate in groups that are popular in your industry

After 3-5 days of regularly publishing posts on Facebook Page, you will realize that no one is reading.

No one likes, no one shares.

Blank jump.

In this stage, there are 2 things that are usually done by novice social media marketing practitioners:

  • Give up
  • Insist on publishing content every day, waiting for miracles

Oh there is one more. Use advertising. But that we will discuss later.

In essence, if at this stage you only publish content without doing other strategies, there will be no progress at all. Even though your content is good.

That is the most common mistake in social media marketing.

The sixth step is the solution.

To be able to make other people know us, then we have to go into a place with lots of people.

That is a group.

To find a group that suits your business, use one of the following keywords:

  • "Groups named [industry name]"
  • "Groups about [industrial name]"
  • "Groups joined by people who like [industry / page / other keywords]"
Business on Facebook
Look for some who have many members ...

... but don't contain spam.

Good group characteristics:

  • Frequently asked questions
  • Each post has a lot of likes / comments
  • Members often share information in the form of text / images / links
  • There are no unrelated posts.

Because some groups are 'closed', then you have to join many groups or not. Then if it turns out ugly, go straight out.

Then after what do you do?

Direct promotion?

Do not. Never ever.

Look ...

Today's Facebook group contains mostly spam. Especially groups that are not maintained by their owners.

While the good group must be a strict owner.

If there is a promotion, immediately kicked out. Once you get kicked, you will not be able to join the group again.

Therefore, don't (direct) promotion.

All you have to do is share information, guides, and other readings that are useful for group members. During the first 1-5 days without any links.

After a few days, after being known, then invite them to like your page.

One of the quickest ways to get a positive response from group members is to share guidelines for certain issues that are packaged in an ebook (PDF).

7. Analyze the performance of your own page

Now, after more than a week of routine posting on the page AND participating in the group, you will begin to get interaction.

You will realize that there are posts that get a lot of likes / comments / shares, there are also a few.

That is not by chance.

Indeed there are several types and content of posts that are more attractive to others. There is also something less interesting.

This is what you must learn.

To be able to get lots of likes, shares, comments, visitors, buyers, then you must always make posts that interest them.

Therefore, we must do the analysis.

The location is in the 'Insights' menu:
Business on Facebook
This is where all the information you need to know.

There are several things you need to analyze:

  1. What day is the most online follower
  2. What time are they online
  3. Which post gets the most reach and engagement
  4. Which post of your competition gets the most engagement

To get data from rivals, you can enter this menu:
Business on Facebook
After knowing what is popular and when is the best time, now all you can do is prepare a content plan for the future.

8. Optimization of pages for search engines

Before we enter this one, if you don't know about SEO, please read this guide.

If you have please continue.

Ahem ..

Actually I should put this point at the beginning. After page creation.

But the problem is, many people are just wrong in focus. They put SEO too much for the page, so the profile is messy.

So remember the principle ...

... don't do excessive SEO on Facebook Page.

The convenience and ease of the user in digging up information remains the main one.

Based on this principle, here are SEO tips for Facebook Page:

Page name

The page name must be exactly the same as your brand name.

But if the name really can be added keywords, add.

For example I have photography services under the name 'Darmawan'. Then I can make the page name into 'Darmawan Photography'.

Thus, the page will get a higher ranking when someone is looking for photography services through Google or Facebook's own search.

A bad example:

For example, I have a website creation service called 'Darmawan'. Because I want to enter keywords, my name is forced to be 'Website Creation - Darmawan'.

Strange right?

In essence, make sure your page name doesn't appear to be forced.

Don't use frills like: services, selling, buying, etc. (example: Darmawan Photography Services)

Although it's true that SEO is better, but the name of a page like this will actually make your business feel less professional.

URL

Just like a page name, the first choice for a URL is a brand name.

If it turns out the brand name URL is not available, we will usually add 1 word in front or behind it. This is where we use keywords.

Like this example, the URL 'Darmawan' is certainly not available so I can use 'DarmawanPhotography ".

Or you can use local keywords.

For example in the Google Keyword Planner there are fairly large search results for the keyword "Jogja website creation services".

Based on this, my URL can be "DarmawanJogja".

Local keywords are keywords that contain regional names.

About

For Facebook Page, about = meta description.

So it's the same as the meta description rule in the on-page SEO guide:

  • Contains 1 keyword
  • Attractive, able to invite clicks

Address & telephone number

It's mandatory, but often forgotten.

In local SEO, addresses and telephone numbers are very large ranking factors.

So when someone searches for your business with local keywords (containing regional names), your Facebook Page will get a high ranking.

In addition to SEO, the column about you will also be like this:
Business on Facebook

Backlink

Let's think realistically.

There are several reasons why we should not bother with backlinks on Facebook Page.

  1. This is not your website, you better provide time and energy to optimize your own website
  2. Facebook Page is normally difficult to get high rankings

I have personally tried several times so that Facebook Page ranks high on Google.

Can you ...

... but soon it will go down again.

This is because Google's algorithm on Facebook Page is not stable.

So the only backlink that you install is from your own website to Facebook Page. No need to bother too much.

Facebook Notes

This is it.

If you are serious about using Facebook Page to bring visitors from Google, then Facebook Notes is the answer.

Look ...

Facebook Page is only a page.

So normally you can only get a high ranking for 1 main keyword (and some derivative keywords).

Now, by making articles in Notes we can target other key words.

This means that by making several notes, you can get high rankings for many keywords.

But pay attention to these 3 things:

  • Don't focus too much on creating content on Facebook, again this is not your website
  • Don't target keywords with high competition, ways that are VERY low competition
  • Always attach links from notes to your website and Facebook Page

Those are some things related to SEO for Facebook Page.

To start creating Notes on Facebook Page, go to Settings> Apps> click the Add App button on the Notes. After that, your notes location is here:
Business on Facebook
Finally, remember 2 things: don't overdo optimization, don't depend too much on traffic from search engines.

9. Use Facebook Ads, here are some short tips

Actually the guide on Facebook Ads will be discussed in another article, but because I'm sure you want to advertise, I discuss it briefly.
Because I am used to using Facebook in English, then those of you who use the Indonesian display please adjust the terms.

  1. Don't 'boost' posts that have been published. Create 'dark post' through the power editor
  2. Use images that are relevant to your message, not just interesting ones
  3. Use the audience from another page as an interest target
  4. Target a very specific audience the more specific the better for your first ad
  5. Install pixel remarketing and pixel conversion tracking on your website
  6. Learn copywriting, mandatory
  7. Always tell what they have to do (click, buy, download, etc.) and why they should do that
  8. If your budget is small, prioritize news feed ads
  9. Always make more than 1 variation for copy, image, and targeting, do split testing
  10. We recommend that you avoid selling directly, give them benefits (the reason discussed in step 10)

That's 10 short tips for you.

If this is the first time you hear these terms, it's natural. Please learn more about Facebook Ads until you are ready.

10. Perform soft sell, not hard sell. This is the way

This is one of the most fatal social media marketing errors.

Whatever strategy you use, even with advertisements, if you do hard selling it will almost certainly fail (except remarketing, usually).

This is because people who are active on Facebook in general are not to buy something.

Imagine,

People who are on Facebook to see photos of their family and friends. Then see ads that offer products.

With such short ads, do those who have absolutely no intention of buying be persuaded?

Not at all.

That is why Facebook Ads is known not to produce sales.

Unlike Google AdWords where people who search with certain keywords do want to buy something.

So on Facebook it's much better if you do soft selling.

How, by giving something.

For example:
  1. Ebook
  2. Guide content
  3. Video / webinar
  4. Discount coupon
But we will not give them for free.

Instead it was exchanged for their contacts. Email or cellphone number.

This is our goal, get contact from those who have a sense of interest in your product / service. Although now not ready to buy.

Thus, on another day we can do "remind" them again. So when they are ready they will buy.

The last few points you must remember

We have discussed 10 steps to start promoting on Facebook. You can now start right from the first stage, which is to look for 5 rivals.

Before we end, there are some things I need to remind you again.
  1. Your website is far more valuable than Facebook Page
  2. This is social media, you have to socialize
  3. Never do hard sell on Facebook
  4. Learn copywriting concepts before you start advertising
Clear?

Let's do some discuss on comment field below :D
